PSA Annual Conference – ‘Gender & the Elections of 2024’ (co-sponsored by Politics)

2024 has been hailed as a global ‘super election year’. More than 60 countries with over 4 billion citizens have held or are expected to hold elections at the local, national and supranational levels between 1 January and 31 December. In addition to the UK general election in July, these ballots include the world’s largest democracy (India), electoral autocracies (Russia & Algeria) as well as increasingly fragile democracies such as the USA and Hungary (Economist – November 13 2023). There is a lot at stake in the 2024 elections, particularly for women and gender equality. Both are on the ballot in almost all countries going to the polls this year.

The new editors of Politics and the convenors of the Women & Politics Specialist Group are co-organising a panel entitled ‘Gender & the Elections of 2024’ to explore what we can learn about gender and politics from this historic election year. We welcome paper proposals on any topic related to this broad theme. This could include, but need not be limited to, any of the following areas and questions (we welcome comparative approaches and/or papers on single country studies).

Paper submissions:

We invite relevant paper proposals for the panel from interested scholars and especially encourage proposal from early career researchers, women, and people of colour. Proposals should not exceed 300 words in length.

Please send your proposals to Kelly Kollman, editor of Politics (kelly.kollman@glasgow.ac.uk).

The deadline for paper abstracts is 1 October 2024.

Apply here before 1 October 2024.

Event to occur on 14-16 April 2025.
